Aroma’s als ondersteuning bij kankertherapie

De oncologie heeft grote behoefte aan ondersteuning van de zorg met niet-farmacologische opties. Aromatherapie maakt gebruik van essentiële oliën, CO2-extracten en andere aromatische grondstoffen. In diverse vormen en toepassingen kan ze bijdragen aan het welzijn van patiënten en hun naasten. Bijvoorbeeld bij het verminderen van distress en angst, het verbeteren van het slaappatroon, het verlichten van misselijkheid, benauwdheid en pijn, maar ook door optimale huid- en mondzorg.1-3

De confrontatie met kanker heeft een grote impact op de patiënt en diens naasten. Mensen die kanker krijgen moeten afscheid nemen van het leven en het lichaam zoals ze die kenden en hun toekomstperspectief is onzeker. Allereerst is er de schok van de diagnose en de dreiging die daarvan uitgaat. Vervolgens ervaren veel patiënten tijdens en na de behandeling klachten zoals angst, depressie en slaapproblemen. Ze komen vaak in een achtbaan van emoties en ervaringen terecht, zoals intensieve behandelingen en de fysieke bijwerkingen daarvan, die op alle niveaus een grote impact hebben.
Het onderzoeksteam van Farahani publiceerde in 2019 een systematische review van 43 studies onder 3239 patiënten met kanker uit 13 landen; dat laat zien dat aromatherapie bij diverse fysieke en psychologische complicaties verlichting kan geven.4 Met dit artikel hoop ik de lezer te inspireren om mensen die te maken krijgen met het ziektebeeld en de gevolgen daarvan, op een zo goed en tegelijk veilig mogelijke wijze te begeleiden.

Er gaan veel verhalen rond, met name op sociale media, dat essentiële oliën kanker kunnen bestrijden. En inderdaad, in met name laboratoriumproeven uit 2013 zien we dat bijvoorbeeld citroenolie en sinaasappelolie kanker remmende effecten vertonen.5,6 In een lab is het niet zo moeilijk om een essentiële olie een kankercel te laten aanvallen en beschadigen, c.q. doden. Dat is in een complex lichaam natuurlijk heel anders. Nu mensen wanhopig op zoek zijn naar genezing en zomaar essentiële oliën innemen, is het meer dan ooit belangrijk zich goed te laten informeren door objectieve en kundige professionals.
